How you can contribute to a more LGBTQ+ inclusive workplace

Creating an environment that is open and welcoming to all is key to better health and happiness in the workplace.

Everybody who is a part of the LGBTQ+ community in the UK has their own unique circumstances and needs. When it comes to providing support at work to your colleagues, there’s no one-size-fits-all. For your LGBTQ+ work colleagues, inclusion can mean the difference between feeling understood and feeling excluded, emotions that can impact their confidence and performance.

What are some of the wellbeing issues that can affect LGBTQ+ colleagues?

Mental Health

LGBTQ+ individuals are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. You can support your LGBTQ+ colleagues, create a safe and inclusive environment where they can openly discuss mental health challenges without fear of judgment. You can encourage them to seek professional help if needed and provide resources for support groups and mental health services.

Discrimination

LGBTQ+ individuals can face discrimination and prejudice in their lives, which can lead to feelings of isolation and low self-esteem. To support them, you can stand up against discrimination whenever you see it. Educate yourself and others on LGBTQ+ issues and advocate for policies that promote inclusivity and equality.

Family and Relationship Issues

LGBTQ+ individuals often face challenges related to coming out to their families or navigating relationships. You can support your colleagues, by creating a supportive
environment where they can openly discuss their experiences. You can also share any available resources for LGBTQ+ friendly support groups or counseling services. Encourage them to build healthy relationships and provide a friendly ear if they need help navigating any challenges.

Other good practices for a more inclusive workplace

Educate yourself

Take some time to educate yourself on the LGBTQ+ community, their history, challenges, and how you can be a better ally. This will enable you to understand their perspective and how you can help.

Show solidarity

Show your support for LGBTQ+ colleagues by participating in Pride events or displaying Pride symbols in your workspace. This will demonstrate your commitment to inclusivity and support for your colleagues.

Listen and be open

Be a good listener and be open to feedback. If your LGBTQ+ colleagues share their experiences or concerns, listen with empathy and be open to suggestions for improvement.

When a workplace is providing the best support for LGBTQ+ colleagues this will include company values that promote diversity, equity and inclusion at work. This could look like manager training and guidance for creating an inclusive environment, affinity groups and senior champions to build a sense of community, and initiatives to support and raise awareness for campaigns like Pride.
