Skin Cancer Awareness Month

The skin is a remarkable feature of the human body. It plays a crucial role in maintaining our health by shielding us from harm and infections, regulating body temperature, managing fluid balance, and eliminating waste through our sweat glands. Given all it does for us, it’s so important that we do what we can to protect it.

According to Cancer Research UK, skin cancer rates are constantly on the rise with 17,500 cases being diagnosed per year[1]. The three primary types are basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and malignant melanoma. Skin Cancer Awareness Month aims to raise awareness and urges everyone to educate themselves on skin health, with protective measures, early detection, and risk factors.

Most skin cancers are linked to excessive sun exposure. UV light rays from the sun is the primary culprit behind most cases, prolonged exposure to UV light can harm skin cells over time.

Individuals with a history of sunburn are at higher risk, especially those who work outdoors for extended periods. While all skin types are vulnerable to sun damage and skin cancer, individuals with fair skin need to be particularly cautious.

Here are some signs to watch out for[2]:

  • Smooth and pearl-coloured
  • Waxy appearance
  • Firm, red lumps or sunken areas
  • Flat, scaly, and crusty red spots

Squamous cell carcinoma typically emerges in sun-damaged areas, mostly affecting individuals with fair skin. They may surface on various body parts and exhibit these symptoms:

  • Scaly texture
  • Hard, crusty scabs
  • Pink or red appearance
  • Raised, tender areas that may bleed

If you notice anything unusual on your skin, it’s important to schedule a visit with your GP at your earliest convenience.

We have recently introduced SkinVision to our Health Cash Plans in April to support early detection of skin cancer.

SkinVision is an app that allows users to submit photographs of any blemishes on the skin. The app’s AI-technology then assesses the risk of the blemish being cancerous and reports back within 30 seconds with the risk assessment.

Our Members have easy access to the service, by visiting the members area online or through our app, just complete a short questionnaire to help the app identify overall skin cancer risk and then upload a photo to be reviewed, it’s as easy as that.

In the three months since launching SkinVision to our members, SkinVision has already identified three cases of skin cancer, these members are now being supported through the NHS or private pathway by SkinVision dermatologists.

For those without access to our Health Cash Plan, if you notice anything unusual on your skin, promptly schedule a visit with your GP.

Given the critical role our skin plays in our well-being, what can we be doing to help to protect it effectively? Here are a few tips for you to consider as the weather becomes sunnier…

  • Apply SPF30 daily, especially on the face, and reapply frequently.
  • Wear sunglasses for eye protection.
  • Seek shade where possible and take breaks in shaded areas especially if you work outdoors.

Let's acknowledge the vital role our skin plays in keeping us healthy and protected. Understanding the risks of skin cancer and taking proactive measures to protect ourselves is so important. Simple precautions like consistent sunscreen use and seeking shade during peak sun hours can significantly reduce the risk of skin cancer. By raising awareness and advocating early detection, we collectively contribute to promoting, healthy, and happy lives.
