Health Shield: Prioritising Employee Wellbeing on International Human Resources Day

International Human Resources Day is a day to spotlight the role HR professionals play observed annually on May 20th. With today in mind, we take the opportunity to reflect on the invaluable contributions of HR professionals in fostering a people-first culture. Here at Health Shield, Isabella Walker (Izzy) is our Head of Human Resources, and we spoke to her to get some insights into Health Shield’s commitment to employee wellbeing and how this focus translates into tangible benefits for our people, and the organisation.

Izzy emphasizes that the essence of HR's role is to ensure employees remain a priority within the organisation. "It's so important that there needs to be someone focusing on the people," she explains. “Without this focus, organisations risk neglecting engagement, inclusivity, and overall wellbeing. At Health Shield, the guiding principle is clear: look after your people, and your people will look after you.”

Health Shield's employee wellbeing strategy is built around three fundamental pillars:

Mental Health and Support:
Mental health is a top priority. Health Shield provides resources and support systems to ensure that employees have access to mental health services and a supportive work environment.

Physical Wellbeing:
Employees can benefit from an annual health check, access to a comprehensive Health Cash Plan, and even an onsite gym. These initiatives help maintain their physical health, proactively address potential health issues.

Financial Wellbeing:
In light of the cost-of-living crisis, financial wellbeing has gained increased attention. Health Shield offers budgeting advice, savings tips, and pension guidance to secure employees short-term and long-term financial stability.

Izzy mentions that her top tip advice for having a wellbeing strategy is “it’s all about having a wellbeing strategy that is flexible and suits all.”

Particularly, a standout aspect of Health Shield's approach is its commitment to listening to, and acting on, employee feedback. Izzy highlights Health Shield’s AIM forum (All Ideas Matter), where representatives from each department discuss ideas and initiatives. This forum led to an increase in the Health Cash Plan coverage for optical and dental services, enabling employees to maintain their health and wellbeing and have access to more frequent and proactive healthcare services.

The results of Health Shield's employee-focused initiatives are having a positive impact. Izzy tells us that, “the Health Cash Plan, in particular, is an affordable choice for businesses of all sizes and sectors. It enhances the total employee benefits package, which is crucial in attracting and retaining talent and personally, now, I wouldn’t ever go without.”

On this International Human Resources Day, Health Shield recognises the critical role HR professionals play in fostering a people-first culture. By prioritising mental, physical, and financial wellbeing, Health Shield not only supports its employees but also strengthens its overall business performance. As Izzy nicely puts it, "Let’s make a conscious effort to support our people to lead healthy, happy lives."
